Venerable TV anti-sitcom “The Simpsons” has given us plenty of fake innovations that we secretly wished were real. From beer-swilling superhero Duffman to a Saturday morning chock full of “Itchy & Scratchy” shorts, Springfield seemed like a sweet place to visit.
Some of these fictional institutions actually have real-life counterparts, such as Ned Flanders small business mall storefront, the Leftorium. The aptly named shop was every “different” kid’s dream.
From lefty scissors to “Lord love a lefty” T-shirt, the bible-thumping shop owner was a retail risk taker even offering part-time jobs to righties (Yes, Flanders was an Equal Opportunity Employer). And whether “Simpsons” writers knew it or not, there are actually a slew of real-life lefty stores, including London’s Anything Left-Handed, which has been around since 1968.
We salute you, fake small screen retailer, because without the Leftorium, Ned Flanders would probably be selling mustache wax from a mall food court kiosk. (Or wandering around making us feel guilty for saying “heck.”)
