Will Obama’s jobs plan be enough?

New president wants to add close to 4 million jobs

Barack Obama

If Barack Obama’s long, inaugural weekend party in D.C. is any indication of how his presidency will improve the economy, then we can all stop rolling pennies and collecting cans.

More than 2 million gawkers, politicos and history buffs may converge on our nation’s capital this weekend. They’ll be there to see the first family, as well as Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen and U2. They all need something to eat and somewhere to sleep. And that’s not to mention the thousands of Barack bobbleheads and other presidential booty for sale on the streets.

Can you say, “Cha-ching?!”

Luckily, Obama’s plan isn’t simply to have an inaugural bash every weekend. But he does have a plan to create 3.7 million full-time and part-time jobs in just two years.

He proposes to generate jobs in construction and engineering: repairing roads and bridges, modernizing federal buildings, and building solar panels and wind turbines. President Obama has also talked about the need to computerize all medical records in five years, creating a huge opportunity for information technology jobs and data entry jobs. Other industries expected to add hundreds of thousands of jobs include retail, manufacturing, and leisure and hospitality.

There is a lot of pressure on Obama from America’s hourly workforce, from those toiling the third shift at restaurant jobs to those working two or three retail jobs. Reshaping the foundering U.S. economy will be a tough first-quarter test for our new commander in chief.
