What should America’s part-time employees be thinking about in 2009? We’ll tell you.
The New Year has just begun, and we bet you’ve already been asked this question: What’s your New Year’s resolution?
Whether you love to pen long lists of cheery self-improvement goals or you think resolutions are for losers, we’ve got a few tips for those who work America’s part-time jobs. If you’re not the resolution type, just think of them as a few bits of free advice for 2009.
1) Get a second (or third) job.
Odds are you’re juggling work, family, friends and dozens of other obligations. The last thing you want to be told is that you need another job. But with the unemployment rate predicted to rise to nearly 9 percent by the end of next year, no one’s job is safe. Grabbing an extra gig is less about picking up a few extra bucks and more about security for your future.
2) Save money.
Cash is tight these days. Plus, with crooks managing portfolios and Wall Street a financial house of horrors, every investment opportunity seems like a potential disaster. But even if you can toss just $100 a month into a savings account with an interest rate of 2 percent, that’ll add up to $13,294 in 10 years. That’s enough for a pretty nice car, or tuition at a solid community college or state school.
3) Go back to school.
We know you probably face two big roadblocks to returning to the classroom: time and money. But these days there are legit courses from online universities that help you manage both of these concerns. Get a quality education with top-notch professors on your own terms with online degrees. And do it all while wearing your bunny slippers.
