You’re job hunting for the perfect part-time summer job when you realize that all the jobs you want are the ones that want you to have experience. So what’s a person to do when you have no prior experience? Do you just give up?

No way. There are plenty of summer jobs out there that may be willing to overlook prior job history if you posses certain other qualities that an employer is looking for.

• Let your personality shine.

“I had a job over the summer where I would be hired to go into closing businesses and move all the stuff out. I had to clean out a lawyer’s office. It was hard enough carrying boxes and boxes down steep stairs. But the worst part is that they have not been in business for years but never sold the building. So nobody was there for years. When I went in there the place was disgusting. There were bugs crawling out of old files. The worst part was when I dropped a box of files down the stairs and as it fell papers went everywhere and then tons of spiders came out of the box. It was nasty. It took me 10 days to clean this place out!”

Scary blueberries:  a summer job horror story!

Ok so last summer my mom told me that I needed to get a job… so I had no idea where to apply. The only place I could think that would hire a 15 year old was the BLUEBERRY RANCH. Blah! Yeah, so I got the job. And I would have to be there for either 4 or 8 hours a day.

Not too bad when you are doing something fun or not totally boring. But guess what I had to do?
I had to sit on these dumb stools (one day it broke right underneath me and I fell onto the concrete floor) and sit at a conveyor belt and feel for soft blueberries that came out! We had to sit very still, could not listen to our iPods, could not look up to talk to someone without getting yelled at by the boss, and could not move our hands for more than like 1 second! It was HARSH! And boring beyond boring! Any of the bad blueberries you had to dump in a tray and when the tray filled you had to clean it out and get nasty blueberry gunk all up in your fingernails and stuff. It was pretty gross. Actually it was really gross because quite often a slug or a beetle would come out and you would have to pick it up and throw that out too! EW!

Anyways, I worked there for like 3 weeks and then I got fired. Wanna know why? I “talked too much” to my sister and didn’t always keep my hand right on those blueberries. Sooo I felt bad and ended up writing an apology letter. That’s the end!”

‘Roller coaster ride’ is more than a metaphor for job seekers

Looking for a job these days is an experience crammed with peaks, valleys, thrills and chills. Ready to get off the ride? The answer to your job search may actually involve operating a roller coaster. Or working the scale at the “Guess your weight” booth. Or barking for the Yak Woman. Or being a pixie dust spreader on the Tilt-A-Whirl.

This is the time of year that theme park jobs begin blossoming, long before the lilacs. Theme park operators need to gear up now to be ready for opening day. And applicants are responding in record numbers. Just the other day thousands lined up to vie for 500 jobs at a new water park in North Carolina. Thousands more are heading to King’s Dominion in Richmond, Va., hoping to grab guaranteed summer jobs. Grab a piece of the action by applying for Six Flags jobs.

If you’ve never worked at a theme park before, here is the deal: You’ll need customer service savvy, you gotta be OK with wearing a uniform, and being cool when it gets hot is an added bonus. An added perk is that many parks offer free or discounted admission for you, your family and friends.

Of course, this means that if you’re a student looking for summer jobs, you’ve got a lot of determined competition for these part-time jobs. If you need to work to pay those tuition bills or keep gas in your trusty Mercury Tracer, better arm yourself with a sharp resume and get out there today.

Biofuels are poised to add jobs to the economy.

The next time you spot Frosty the Snowman’s corncob pipe or a moldy pool cover, just think: That could be powering your next car. And more importantly, it could also be powering the economy.

A new report suggests that biofuels could pump 30,000 jobs and $5.5 billion into the economy in the next three years alone. Biofuels come in gas, liquid or solid form and come from dead biological material, hence their snazzy name.

These new full-time and part-time jobs are expected to come from the following industries: construction, engineering and even farming.

Biofuels have a good chance of catching on if the science is sound. Not only are they projected to help lift us out of this economy, but they will produce the green jobs President Barack Obama is hoping to add via the stimulus package.

In other words, it’s only a matter of time before a major sports steam has their stadium named after a rare type of algae. Welcome to Seaweed Park!
